Companies in the UK using social media among their workforce will see positive outcomes, according to Jon Callas, chief technology officer at Entrust.
Mr Callas also said the use of social media in the workplace will soon become unstoppable.
"Social media is a good and effective way to get messages out, it's a good way to do cheap advertising, it's a good way to build rapport among the company," he said.
The expert said that the more a business embraces social media and takes control of it the more it will be able to understand what is going on within their own organisation.
His comments emerged as a survey by DLA Piper of 355 businesses and employees identified that 65 per cent of businesses encourage staff to use social media for work purposes, although only 25 per cent have a standalone policy governing that use.
The poll also revealed that 25 per cent have a standalone policy dealing with the use of social media, while less than half (43 per cent) had a social media policy existing alongside a broader set of IT or HR regulations.
