Small companies have the potential to generate more cash through their internet operations by understanding the eco system better and the latest IT industry developments, according to Phil Kingsland, site director of internet users' educational and advisory portal, knowthenet.org.uk.
"There's tremendous scope for small businesses to increase the proportion of their turnover that comes from the internet," he said.
The proportion of larger businesses' turnover generated online is "substantially higher" than that of smaller businesses, Mr Kingsland added.
The expert said small firms should "read around developments in web technology" and increase "their understanding of how they can tie this into their business".
He also said that this could "make a huge difference" to the online revenues they generate.
His comments emerged as Interactive Media in Retail Group said late last month that value of the UK e-retail market has grown from £0.8 billion in 2000 to £58.8 billion last year.
