As people's demand for increased ethernet speed rises, companies should take a look at their needs before deciding to install fibre optic systems, according to Michael Crane, editor of Network Communications News (NCN), a monthly magazine dedicated to network infrastructure installers, integrators and end users.
He said those looking to upgrade their cabling should study their options carefully before investing in systems that might end up being "pointless".
"While investing in a top of the range, so-called future proof cabling system may well prove a sound investment if the your business requires high end speed and performance, for example, in a financial institution, it is pointless spending the budget on an all-singing, all-dancing fibre optic system if there is no need for it," he said.
He went on to say businesses should take a close look at the fibre optic cables available and find out whether there is one that would better serve their companies' purposes.
