Consumers will see a reduced number of feature phones on the shelves in the next five years, according to Richard Sharp, technology editor at gadgetsandgizmos.org, an IT industry news website.
"Feature phones will always have their place in the market for people who simply want to make calls. However, the percentage of people using them will continue to reduce dramatically over the next five years," he said.
The expert went on to say consumers want to get more from devices and want them to do everything.
"It makes sense to have one device which acts as a phone, camera, computer and portable media player, instead of multiple devices cluttering up your pockets or bag," he said.
His comments emerged as a report by the IDC revealedfeature phone shipments had fallen by 29 per cent in the second quarter of 2011, while smartphone shipments rose by 48 per cent from a year ago.
This is the first time smartphones have surpassed the number of feature phones, the report found.
