The fears of getting a virus are potentially far greater than the reality if people take the necessary steps to prevent getting one in the first place, according to Tony Neate, chief executive of Get Safe Online (getsafeonline.org).
"People need to be aware of it and people need to take action in relation to their security and that action needs to be done across the board both for their personal protection and their PC and laptop's protection," Mr Neate said.
Advances in the IT industry have helped fight computer viruses in the past.
The expert went on to say that a rise in computer viruses will only be in line with the number of people using the internet.
He also said that computer users should not only protect their hardware but also their online integrity, which has become a recent target of hackers.
His comments emerged as research by Aviva showed that one in three people think all websites pose a security threat.
