IT industry news: Fast-speed broadband 'more accessible'

17:12 14th September 2010

It has become cheaper to implement next-generation internet in Britain thanks to the access to existing infrastructure, according to Rowland O'Connor, editor of broadband provider reviews website Broadband-Help.com.

"With many of the high costs of infrastructure investment removed, the barriers have come down," he said.

The expert said intervention by the authorities and collaboration among major telecommunication companies would allow the UK to make a certain level of broadband available to all, despite "limited funds".

"With centralised legislation and cooperation from the big telecoms providers, achieving a standard minimum broadband access for everyone is finally a possibility," Mr O'Connor said.

He also said the UK's smaller businesses will aid the super-fast fibre roll out by contributing with their creative and entrepreneurial talent.

?In other IT industry news, Openreach, telecommunications company BT's local access network division, said a new trial where it will allow communications providers to nominate exchanges for fibre enablement is to take place as part of its super-fast fibre roll out.
