The IT industry should expect the emergence of newer and more sophisticated viruses, according to Greg Day, director of security at McAfee.
"With cyber crime, an illegitimate revenue stream comes from this [malware]. Equally, we are starting to see it being used for things like cyber war and cyber terrorism. There is unfortunately a very strong interest to keep developing new sophisticated techniques to be successful," Mr Day said.
The expert also said that people's use and dependency on technology is on the rise. He noted how four or five years ago Facebook or the iPhone didn't exist and that these technologies are prompting people to become more dependent on them.
He added that as technology becomes more advances d, that also creates new opportunities.
Separately, thousands of consumers were infected by a Trojan which managed to avoid detection by traditional anti-virus software while browsing the internet, according to research from M86 Security.
