IT industry news: Entry-level smartphones 'just first step on the ladder'

Less sophisticated smartphones are set to entice users to upgrade in the future, according to Heather Mclean, editor at Mobile Business, a monthly mobile trade channel magazine.

"It's like a first step on the ladder to buying your iPhone," she said.

These entry-level handsets, are being marketed by firms like HTC, LG and Samsung as "smartphones that are designed to be at a lower price point in the market".

Such handsets, she added, will remain with mobile users only for a while before they look to buy the latest gadget with more functions or services.

The expert also said entry-level smartphones are made for children who use pay-as-you-go devices. They too, she said, would like to upgrade to a better model.

"The idea is hook them in young and then, as soon as they start earning money, they'll sign up and they'll get a decent phone," she explained.

Her comments emerged as a study by Juniper Research revealed late last month shipments of entry-level smartphones are set to exceed 185 million globally by the year 2015.
