IT industry news: Enterprises 'recognise IT as a cost-cutter'

07:19 23rd December 2010

Companies have recognised IT as an important tool to cut costs, which in return has boosted the IT industry during the recent economic downturn, according to Gerry McLaughlin of ITContractor.com.

"IT jobs salaries and contract rates barely went down during the downturn, and are now back up above levels of two years ago. This was a downturn that IT sat out for the most part," Mr McLaughin said.

There had been a "sea change" in attitudes to IT departments, with many firms now seeing an area previously classed as dispensable as crucial to saving costs, the expert added.

"Whereas previously IT was seen as a cost that could easily be cut when times are hard in order to protect the bottom line, it is now seen as an enabler of cost-cutting in the business," he explained.

In other IT undustry news, 72 per cent of IT managers feel that the recession is continuing for the industry and they must wait until 2012 for a recovery, according to a survey by the IT Board published earlier this month.
