IT industry news: 'Don't write off laptops'

06:42 15th September 2010

Tablet computers like Apple's iPad might gain popularity but it won't mean the demise of the laptop computer, according to Tom Royal, deputy editor at Computeractive.

"It is likely we will see the iPad become more and more popular in certain areas, in certain types of business and with home users, but I think it would be foolish to write off laptops to history," he said.

The expert said laptops will follow the trend of getting smaller and lighter and easier to carry but they will be around for a while.

His views surfaced as Ben Reitzes, an analyst with Barclays Capital, suggested in research notes that sales of tablet computers were impacting on laptop sales and predictions for the future.

The expert said he expects PC units to grow 16 per cent year-over-year in 2010 (down from his own previous estimate of 19 per cent) and then only by 10 per cent in 2011.
