IT industry news: Data storage 'should be considered before adopting Android'

All companies, not just those operating in the IT industry, should address the way Google stores data before buying into smartphones powered by its Android mobile operating system (OS), according to Andy Betts, editor of Smartphone Daily, a mobile computing blog.

"Android devices are very much cloud-based, so a lot of the data is stored online," Mr Betts said, highlighting that this could be seen as a "security issue" that stretches beyond those working in the IT industry and could affect any kind of business.

He also said companies would rather opt for services that give them much more control of where their data is stored. Mr Betts said businesses would prefer data to be stored on their systems.

There is a growing trend of companies adopting smartphones and other mobile internet devices and it should continue in the future, he added.

His remarks followed a report by Reuters that said Standard Chartered is replacing the BlackBerry, currently its standard corporate communications device, with the iPhone.
