Small and Medium Enterprises, or SMEs, in the UK will have to provide a level of assurance by incorporating data security audits as part of the tendering process, according to Alex Fidgen, director of MWR InfoSecurity, a company that advises some of Europe's largest companies on the secure management of information systems.

"Obviously, there is a perceived risk that enterprises that use a large number of SME suppliers could be exposing themselves to risk by holding their data with those suppliers," he said.
He went on to say that this issue needs to be look at properly due to the level of assurance that is currently required.

"For instance, just about all of our client base is enterprise and all of the time, the number of incidents we've seen where they're asking questions about third party data audits has increased and therefore, you can see this isn't something that's going to decrease or go away - it's going to become part of the landscape," he added.

In other IT industry news, firms. are increasingly using social networking sites like Facebook to serve their needs, according to Websense, which offers unified web, data and email content security to tens of thousands of enterprise, mid-market and small organisations around the world.
