IT industry developments have meant more people are increasingly reliant on the internet and this could mean more cyber attacks through computer networks, according to David Blackwell, director of cybersecurity at information intelligence experts Detica.
"As we become increasingly reliant on cyberspace and people become increasingly aware of the latest criminal opportunities that everything being digital presents, there is every chance that the number would rise," he said.
But the expert said the development of government policies may help stop a significant amount of cyber crimes.
"It's a rising problem, but we would hope, through the actions of businesses and the actions of industry working with government, that we can actually stem that increase," he concluded.
According to Kaspersky Lab's annual Threat Evolution report, last year there were more than 580 million cyber attacks, a figure that represented nearly eight times more than the ones registered a year earlier.
