Developments in the IT industry have allowed for more people to use smartphones but this has also led to an increase in security threats, according to David Emm, senior technology consultant at Kaspersky Lab UK.
"We're starting to get to a point now where the more people use smartphones, for banking or to shop online, the more incentive there is for cyber criminals and they are getting more sophisticated," Mr Emm said.
People are increasingly using browsers rather than applications to access the internet via their mobile, according to the Orange Mobile Exposure study released this month. Orange claimed this showed that people were increasingly seeking a PC-like experience on their smart phone.
"Apart from malware, people should start thinking about the device contents and whether they might want to encrypt it as well to safeguard against people picking up the information if they lose their device," the expert added.
He said smartphone users should be wary of any application whose source is dubious or any application looking for access above anything it should need.
