Cyber criminals will no doubt use social media sites for their criminal and spamming activities in the future, according to Rik Ferguson, director of security, research and communications EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) at Trend Micro.
Anything where there's unlimited availability and huge public interest is something that will encourage spam," he explained following the launch of new social networking site Google +.
Separately, Kaspersky Lab recently highlighted the growth of phishing scams via Facebook.
"Anything where there's unlimited availability and huge public interest is something that will encourage spam," he said.
"I think the way that Google rolls out its services almost lends itself to that, because it tends to do it on a strictly invite-only basis for quite a long period of time. It's a prime target for what we would call socially-engineered spam," he added.
He went on to say that the rise in popularity of social networks for communication will exacerbate criminal interest in them.
