Firms in the UK are gradually recognising the key contribution contractors make to their businesses, according to ITContractor.com, an online portal for workers in the IT industry.
"There has been a sea change in attitude at companies where, instead of seeing contractors as a cost, they are seeing them as integral to their companies, and even the major financial institutions are holding onto them whilst shedding costs elsewhere," said Gerry McLaughlin of ITContractor.com.
He said that as a result of this change of attitude contractors have managed to weather the recession relatively well.
"For the first time in several downturns IT contractors were not badly hit," he said.
To illustrate his point he said contractor rates are now stronger than before the crisis hit in 2009.
His comments emerged as Badenoch & Clark said earlier this month that contractors communicating their knowledge to the companies that hire them in the IT sector would be a key feature in 2011.
