IT industry contractors would like to see some clarity over the IR35 rules which have been the centre of concerns for over a decade, according to Gerry McLaughlin of ITContractor.com.
This is in the context of a review of the tax system for small businesses. Both income tax and national insurance contributions should be integrated, according to the Office of Tax Simplification. Some expect the move could put an end to the controversial tax rule.
"What contractors really want is some kind of certainty so that they know far more easily what their position is as regards their tax status and liability," Mr McLaughlin said.
The expert criticised the IR35 rules for being "hazy", adding they had "spawned a whole load of court cases" at great expense to the taxpayer.
"It sometimes seemed like they were arguing over how many angels you could fit on a pinhead and this was time-consuming for both sides," he said.
