IT industry news: Contactless mobile payments 'to benefit retailers'

07:21 1st June 2011

A push for an increase use in mobile payments is set to benefit retailers as they can cash in on impulse buys and use more targeted marketing in a more efficient way, according to Mike Hawkes, chairman of the Mobile Data Association (MDA).?
"The promise that this has, particularly around things like the Olympics, is quite something," said Mr Hawkes, adding that he expected "a lot more devices" to incorporate the technology.

"We'll probably see the use of the collected data, looking into GPS [global positioning system] locations and transactions, to get far more targeted advertising," he said.

Yet the expert said he didn't believe more personal advertising via mobiles could annoy users, because "operators are savvy enough to [know] that if they push too much content to people in a way that's inappropriate they will lose customers".

His comments followed an earlier announcement that Barclaycard has launched the first mobile contactless payment services in collaboration with Orange. Users can make purchases of up to £15 at over 50,000 stores across Britain.
