IT industry news: Consumers 'seek the latest smartphones'

06:30 29th September 2011

Consumers are always on the lookout of the smartphones with the latest technological features, according to Heather McLean, co-founder and editor for online mobile news publication, Smart Gorillas.

"End users definitely want the latest and greatest," she said.

"Only workers looking for a solid work horse will go with something that has the bare essentials – emails and phone calls – but even that is a smaller percentage of people now than it was 12 months ago, as even banks now are shifting their staff over to the likes of iPhone," the expert added.

She went on to say users want attractive phones with smart technologies inside that lets them do more stuff and "have more fun". She also said these devices are increasingly becoming more affordable.

"Why be the only person at the pub with a BlackBerry Bold, when everyone else has an iPhone or HTC?," she said.

Her comments emerged as Research In Motion (RIM), manufacturers of the BlackBerry mobile phone, posted a 15 per cent drop in revenue during the second quarter of the company's latest fiscal year.
