IT industry news: Console gamers 'will keep buying physical games'

06:21 5th October 2010

Breakthrough developments in the IT sector have paved the way of digital downloads of games, but those will not replace physical sales, according to business group director for GFK Chart-Track Dorian Bloch.

He said that the ability of downloads to become the dominant medium "depends on the type of product" and how it is delivered to the consumer.

"We're not at the stage yet where you would be downloading a game like Call of Duty: Black Ops on Xbox 360 and PS3 and then playing it online," he added.

He conceded that downloadable content had gained a foothold recently, but the expert also said this could be "complementary" rather than posing a threat to the dominance of physical copies of console games at retail outlets.

Mr Bloch went on to predict that the games industry was about to enter a lucrative phase as improved games enter the market.

Separately, over the first six months of 2010 PC games sold more in digital format than traditional retail units in the US, marking the first time on record this has occurred, according to a September 20th 2010 report from the NPD Group.
