Companies looking to improve sales must seriously look at the online and mobile business model as an alternative source of revenues, according to Ben Sillitoe, editor of Retail Gazette.
"E-retail is very much driving the retail industry at the moment," he said.
Consumer demand was stimulating "huge technological advancement across the industry" and that "all retailers [were] focusing on multichannel development as a tool for growth", the expert said.
"You've got some huge companies in retail, like ASOS.com, Amazon, Play.com and Ebay, which are the major success stories within the industry at the moment, and it appears that most of the bricks-and-mortar retailers are also developing their multichannel capabilities as well," he added.
Mr Sillitoe went on to say that online and mobile commerce is a crucial aspect to consider for all enterprises at the moment due to the movement of the consumer there.
"That is where the consumer is and these are the platforms where the consumer wants to shop," he said. His comments emerged as the Retail Eyes & Retail Gazette Salary Survey 2011 suggested that the 16 months had smiled kindly on e-retail and multichannel employees, with 64 per cent receiving a pay rise in that period.
