IT industry news: Companies 'can suffer from financial malware'

Companies should do more to protect themselves from money-stealing malware as it poses a real threat to enterprises, according to Richard Moffitt, consultant systems engineer at web security provider Trusteer.

The expert said popular methods of doing business online are particularly under threat.

"We’re seeing numerous configurations trying to attack people in various ways, not only in banking but in online transactions – anything where money can play a hand,” Mr Moffitt said on the sidelines of Infosecurity Europe at London's Earls Court late last month.

"It'll even spread further into businesses that aren't directly involved in financial transactions – there are attacks on gambling sites and other businesses," he added.

He also said the growing popularity of people buying items on the internet can be a contributing factor to the impact of malware to consumers.

His comments emerged as the latest Online Retail Monitor report from the British Retail Consortium revealed total retail search volumes grew by 29 per cent in the first three months of this year.
