IT industry news: Companies can 'displace' IT problems using public cloud

06:48 24th August 2010

By adopting public cloud computing services, companies can relieve themselves of the burden of certain IT problems, according to David Bradshaw, European SaaS (Software as a Service) and cloud services research manager at technology market intelligence firm International Data Corporation (IDC).

"The public cloud allows organisations to displace a problem and shift it into the cloud," Mr Bradshaw said.

A third-party would then, in effect, run the system transferred to the cloud by the organisation, Mr Bradshaw said, adding that "they are not then responsible for that IT equipment".

The expert said this would allow the organisation to focus on how to use the system most effectively rather than on building and maintaining it.

"The orchestration will be the problem of the IT department, the actual systems behind the service won't," said Mr Bradshaw.

In other IT news, server revenue for public cloud computing will grow from $582 million (£375 million) in 2009 to $718 million (£463 million) in 2014, recent (May 10th 2010) research conducted in May by IDC showed.
