IT industry news: Common phone charger 'can eliminate electronic waste'

06:52 11th January 2011

Despite advances in the IT industry, a common standard phone charger can have a "huge benefit to consumers in terms of flexibility and cost", according to Conrad Longmore, editor of Mobile Gazette. The expert added that it "will potentially eliminate a good deal of electronic waste" as well as offer benefits of convenience.

"It means that you are always likely to be able to get your hands on a compatible charger no matter what model of phone you have" he said.

Specifications drawn up by the European Commission have won the backing of major phone manufacturing firms including Nokia, Apple and Samsung, with the first chargers expected to begin appearing early this year.

Incompatibility of chargers for mobile phones is not only a major inconvenience for users, but also a considerable environmental problem, the commission said in a statement late last year. "Users who want to change their mobile phones must usually acquire a new charger and dispose of the old one, even if it is in good condition," it added.
