IT industry news: Cloud solutions 'can store data securely'

14:06 28th November 2011

Cloud computing solutions have the ability to keep data protected from unauthorised access, according to an industry expert.

Mark Dampster, associate of the Centre for Cyber Security, said there is no reason why cloud services cannot be "as secure as personally-networked infrastructure".

People who have completed IT training courses may be aware that 2012 is being tipped as a breakthrough year for cloud computing by industry commentators, despite some businesses still harbouring security concerns about the technology.

Mr Dampster suggested the cloud provides a new solution to a long-running problem - how to back-up data in the safest and most efficient way.

However, he also said companies must be properly educated before they start to use cloud systems.

"Everybody needs to understand how the systems will work and do some risk assessment with the supplier of the service and the staff who use it," the expert added.

His comments follow a recent survey from Vanson Bourne, which revealed 70 percent of UK businesses are not very confident in their ability to fully recover their systems or data following a period of downtime or data loss.
