IT industry news: Cloud computing 'will replace traditional desktops'

10:09 15th December 2011

A technology expert has claimed that cloud services will soon replace existing desktop systems in the workplace and at home.

Dr Mick Grierson, computing lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London, is one of several figures tipping cloud solutions to make a big impact on the IT industry in 2012.

In addition, a recent survey by recruitment firm Modis International suggested jobseekers with IT training in the area of cloud computing could be in demand next year.

Dr Grierson claimed the success of cloud gaming service OnLive has shown how the technology can work in practice, as it provides users with access to applications they want without the need for a large amount of hardware.

In the same way, more businesses may soon decide to replace their on-site servers with a cloud computing solution.

"You can just rent a server and it'll feed you any applications you wanted - for a few pounds a month," said Dr Grierson.

"People in business will still use desktops but not in the same way they used to."
