Businesses could get environmental benefits if they switch to cloud computing, according to Stuart Hibbert, chief executive of icomplete.com.
Mr Hibbert said that most servers only achieve about 15 per cent utilisation, citing IDC figures.
"By switching to cloud infrastructure, you're basically using shared resources and there'll be less servers so less computers actually running the infrastructure for people," he claimed.
If there are less operative computers, it will have a good impact in the environment because the buildings internal power requirements will be lower, according to Mr Hibbert.
He considers that people can do their duties in a better way if they are connected to cloud infrastructure.
Besides, Mr Hibbert said that cloud infrastructure makes easier the telecommuting so people will not have to waste their time in the daily commute into an office.
This will be good for the environment because it will bring big fuel savings.
According to the research, six in ten workers (1,000 surveyed) are demanding access to cloud services, but only one in ten companies are currently deploying them (from a separate survey of 5,000 business owners).
