Businesses initially becoming acquainted with cloud computing face high security risks, according to Subbu Iyer, senior director of products, application lifecycle management software at HP, who described the technology as a "huge concern".
"If you're moving a critical business process completely onto the cloud, the first area that CIOs [chief information officers] are concerned with is, 'Is it secure?'," he said.
Mr Iyer went on to say that the technology offers a lot of opportunity to companies as it allows more mobility.
"Those two areas are where most customers are asking for solutions and looking at security as a huge complement to moving onto the cloud," Mr Iyer expanded.
His comments emerged as the European Union recently identified the potential cost savings and revenues attached to the cloud as part of a public consultation on how best to implement the developing technology.
