Cloud computing solutions may help companies in the UK manage their servers more efficiently, according to Phil Wainewright, UK vice-chairman for EuroCloud.
The expert said some of the previous solutions can prove to be high maintenance.
"I think what a lot of small businesses have found is that they're stuck with existing software packages that they put on board a long time ago and they're getting a bit long in the tooth. They might be a bit expensive to maintain or if they're not costing money to maintain, they may have an opportunity cost because they're not able to give the functionality that people need in their business today," he said.
But, he added, cloud providers give users firewalls and plenty of security in many instances. This is why, he said, the security from a cloud providers is better in many ocassions than company servers.
However, he went on to say that companies must ensure they protect their staff's login details in order to avoid an unauthorised sharing of the information.
His comments emerged as research on behalf of Opsview revealed 57 per cent of IT directors were concerned about cloud services costs spiralling out of control, with 54 per cent of companies unsure of how many cloud-based services employees were using.
