IT industry news: Christmas 'a great time for fraudsters'

06:24 14th December 2010

Fraudsters find it easier to conceal illegitimate activities around Christmas and New Year since the number of transactions increase, according to Martyn Ruks, technical director at MWR InfoSecurity.

"If there is an increase in transactions, there is less time to scrutinise those transactions, therefore, it is easier to see things
through in the background," Mr Ruks said.

"There is obviously more opportunity for information to be on display when people are getting busier," he added.

There has been an increase in the number of impersonations in the UK, according to research from CIFAS, the UK's fraud prevention service.

The fraud prevention service also advised people to be especially vigilant over the festive period.

Mr Ruks advised consumers to be careful who they buy things from and to
be prudent as to the information they share either through Facebook or
other social media networks.

According to CIFAS, there have been over 76,000 victims of impersonation in the UK.
