IT industry news: Children 'must learn about online safety'

06:51 24th January 2011

Children must be made aware of online safety by both their parents and internet companies and they must be given the necessary tools to report any worries they might have, according to a spokeswoman from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.

"A lot of parents tend to put their head in the sand because they don't understand what's going on, rather than confronting what's happening online," she said.

"The divide is getting smaller, but obviously there is still some work to do with regard to educating and giving parents the confidence they need to be able to talk to their children about the online environment," she added.

The warning came as two related studies published by the European Commission earlier this month highlighted the quality and availability of parental controls online. The reports recommended greater support by internet companies to young internet users.

The spokeswoman went on to say that technology evolution means that parents and internet companies cannot afford to rest o their laurels as they seek to protect children.
