IT industry developments have allowed the creation of inexpensive mobile phones with WiFi, a device that's appealing to consumers, according to Conrad Longmore, editor of Mobile Gazette.
"There seems to be a particular interest from consumers in inexpensive touchscreen phones with WiFi capabilities, giving consumers an opportunity to side-step the carrier altogether," said Mr Longmore.
The expert went on to say that whereas those with contracts don't have to be concerned about the amount of data they use, those with pay-as-you-go accounts usually do.
His comments emerged as figures published online by market research organisation GfK showed that the prepay smartphone market grew by seven per cent in August 2010 compared with August 2009.
Separately, Everything Everywhere plans to start building a next-generation LTE (long-term evolution) mobile network to cope with the surge in demand for data, several news reports said.
