Substantial changes in technology and behavioural shifts can make a difference in to the sustainability of a business, according to Peter Job, chief executive officer at Intergence Systems, a company that builds products in IT.
The expert said there is evidence of change already taking place in the workplace, for example, with people turning off their computers and software that helps with this issue as well.
"The real areas that people can focus on - where the power consumption is really large - are data centres. That's the real area and actually there is a lot of equipment in data centres that doesn't have power monitoring on it," he said.
Mr Job went on to say that firms should also focus on behavioural change. He said it is necessary for companies to link the technology with behavioural change and to get people incentivised to start thinking about how much power an enterprise consumes.
In other IT news, according to the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), there are not enough people in the UK with the skills to install renewable energy systems and carry out other tasks that are essential to maintaining sustainability.
