The use of open source technology in the IT industry and other sectors allows companies to obtain real time statistics and analytics without investing too much, according to Nicola Clark, features editor at Marketing Magazine.
"If you are small company you can use open source technology and you don't have to invest any money – you just set up a bit.ly link and then you can get real time stats. There's no barriers to this type of technology; it's available to everybody," Ms Clark said.
She said that companies hoping to track the number of people visiting their blog in a cheap way, could, for instance, post a link to their blog on their Twitter account by using www.bit.ly.
By doing this, businesses will be able to know every time someone clicks on the blog and they will also know what time they clicked and from where, she said.
However, according to research published by SEO Analytics, seven in ten small to medium-sized businesses are not using search engine optimisation.
