Businesses should consider reusing and recycling IT industry equipment in an effort to save developing nations from suffering the polluting effects of end-of-life devices, according to Andrew Boddington, marketing director at Ethical IT, the computer recycling service provider.
"We very much focus on UK recycling because then we've got a pretty good idea that it's not going to end up somewhere in the Third World polluting beaches or whatever," he said.
The expert went on to say that there are services available to wipe out information people want to protect.
He recognised that the data security is an important issue that businesses do consider before recycling their equipment, but that it can be easily dealt with by erasing the information.
His comments emerged as members of the European Parliament recommended more strict measures to tackle electronic waste in developing nations.
Separately, more than 70 per cent of 18 to 25-year-olds want recycling programmes in the workplace, according Johnson Controls Global WorkPlace Solutions, the integrated real estate and facilities management business.
