If enterprises lack the appropriate emergency backup systems, they may face disaster, according to a spokesman for Imperva, which offers database and application security, reporting and audit solutions for companies worldwide.
"For example, earthquakes in California could take down a data centre. On the other hand, hackers or insiders can try to wipe out data," he explained.
He said a possible solution was the use of unified data storage, but he said they would work as long as security is put in place.
"Sadly, with many enterprises, security is not a priority and companies only lock down data after a breach," he said.
Separately, Subbu Iyer, senior director of products, application lifecycle management software at HP, said recently IT security has now become a priority that reaches right to the heart of businesses.
He went on to say that information security now has a greater influence on the reputation of organisations than it did previously.
