IT industry news: Bugs in new smartphones 'unavoidable'

06:52 18th January 2011

Bugs in new smartphones will continue to be an "inevitable" annoyance for the IT industry given their complexity, according to Matt Powell, technology expert at smartphone and broadband comparison site BroadbandGenie.co.uk.

"Increased complexity means a higher chance of bugs sneaking in and being missed during testing, and the immense popularity of smartphones means there's a greater likelihood of bugs being discovered by end users," said Mr Powell.

The bugs are "an inevitable outcome of a complex technology entering the mainstream", he said.

Glitches in smartphones have hit the headlines recently. A small number of Google Android smartphones sent texts to the wrong recipients after the handsets were affected by a bug. The giant search engine has already said it is working on fixing the problem.

Although it might seem easier to use quick-fix patches to deal with bugs, Mr Powell suggested users should wait for manufacturers to release their official solutions.
