IT industry news: Broadband speeds 'should be regulated more'

More should be done to regulate broadband speeds, as the current regulations still leave a lot of confusion, according to Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk.

His comments emerged as the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BACP) have issued new guidance on the way in which broadband speeds are advertised in Britain.

But Mr. Phillips said the changes don't go far enough.

"I think that the changes will help to some extent. However, there is still going to be a lot of confusion because the advertising messages will be based upon the speed which ten per cent of customers are able to achieve," he said.

"It still means that 90 per cent of customers won't be able to achieve that speed. What it does is water down the current 'up to' speed messages, but it still means that the 'up to' figure will be theoretical for many consumers," he added.
