IT industry news: Broadband speed 'suffers as a result of inadequate infrastructure'

Broadband speed in the UK is affected negatively by incompetent infrastructure, according to Chris Marling, editor of Broadbandgenie.co.uk.

He said that most of the telephone exchanges in Britain still rely on old copper wires to carry information to people's houses.

This, he said, contributes to slow speed in broadband connections.

"It is fine for calls, but woefully inadequate for broadband - a lot of data packets are lost and need to be resent, which gets worse the further you are from your nearest telephone exchange. This creates the slow speeds, and explains why things are worse for rural customers," he said.

However, those using fibre-optic material are able to predict broadband speeds more accurately.

Separately, Ofcom, the communications watchdog, recently said that average download speeds remain at less than 50 per cent of 'up to' speeds claimed by certain Internet Service Providers.
