IT industry news: Broadband real speed 'about half what people pay for'

Broadband speeds in the UK are on average delivering 45 per cent of the tariff the internet service providers (ISPs) are advertising to consumers, according to new Ofcom research.

The industry watchdog revealed that the average consumer gets charged for a speed of up to 11.5 mbit/s but only receives the service of a 5.2 mbit/s broadband connection.

"Ofcom's research shows that average speeds have increased which is good news, but there is scope for a further step change in the quality of the UK communications infrastructure," said Ed Richards, Ofcom chief executive.

He went on to say that the new code forces companies to provide their potential clients with information which is as accurate as possible. Mr Richards also said most of the ISPs have signed up to the code.

In other IT industry news, Michael Phillips, product director of Broadbandchoices.co.uk, recently said the British government should explore other mobile technologies when rolling out high-speed broadband.
