IT industry news: BlackBerry 'has been hit by demand for other devices'

06:31 30th September 2011

The growing popularity of smartphones has had a negative impact on the sales of BlackBerry, according to Heather McLean, co-founder and editor for online mobile news publication, Smart Gorillas.

"Demand for BlackBerry devices has been harmed over the last two years as other manufacturers have come out with new, innovative ways of making mobile phones," she said.

Earlier this month, Research In Motion (RIM), makers of the BlackBerry, posted a drop in revenue for the second quarter of fiscal 2012. It was $4.2 billion, (£2.6 billion) down 15 per cent from $4.9 billion (£3.1 billion) in the previous quarter and down ten per cent from $4.6 billion (£2.9 billion) the same quarter of last year, the company said in a press release.

Ms McLean said new devices are more pleasing to the eye than RIM's products and she went on to say "the operating systems, user interfaces, functionalities and systems to support those devices, such as app stores, have been way ahead of BlackBerry devices for some time".

"The company hasn't moved fast enough to remedy the gaps in its portfolio and technology," she explained.
