For generations bingo has been at the heart of social interaction and its online version is likely to move to the world of social networking this year, according to betting journalist Richard Preen.
"A lot of betting firms are looking at [social networks] and have an interest in certain areas such as Facebook," he said.
Mr Preen said such a move could herald the expansion of more gaming sites onto the social networking sphere.
His comments followed a recent poll by whichbingo.co.uk which voted Sun Bingo the best bingo site of last year. The website promoted high-profile competitions such as its giveaway of 30 brand new cars in 30 days, which is seen as crucial for its success.
The expert went on to say that the game's social aspect made it suitable to migrate to social media. He also highlighted bingo's strong emphasis on playing with groups of friends, while by contrast this wasn't as integral a factor in hard or sports betting.
