Computer users should be particularly weary of unknown links and attachments, according to Kevin Wharram, a security consultant.
"Make sure that your security features are up to date, [including] Microsoft packages. If someone sends you links, check it out with the site – you need to be very aware. Third party viruses are usually [ones] which have been redirected to a site that has been compromised, he said.
The expert said users need to make sure their PC settings and files are secure.
PCs could use Microsoft Security Essentials, or Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool to fight malicious software.
"Most importantly, [do not] open up attachments sent from anybody," he added.
In other IT industry news, owners of mobile devices, like smartphones and tablet computers, should really take security seriously, according Con Mallon, director of regional product marketing at online protection brand, Norton.?
The public must "basically start to take security seriously on their smartphones and on tablets", he said.
