IT industry news: Best broadband speed 'may depend on cuts'

06:41 22nd December 2010

Achieving the best broadband in Europe might be dependent on constrained public spending in the UK, according to Antony Walker, chief executive of the Broadband Stakeholder Group.

"How do you achieve that target whilst also entering a situation where there's very constrained public spending?" said the chief executive of the government broadband advisory group.

"I think that is the really tricky bit; we're not in a situation where the government can throw vast amounts of money at this," he explained to the research team.

According to Mr Walker "smart solutions" are "what is going to be required in the months and years ahead" to compensate for this.

Separately, a poll published last month by Broadband Expert revealed just five per cent of Britons believe the UK will have "the best super-fast broadband network in Europe," [",} as pledged by the current government.
