IT industry news: Apple's brand 'to give iPad an edge'

Apple's formidable "reputation for quality" will help protect the iPad from the arrival of cheaper competitors, according to Paul Allen, editor of Computeractive.

"The computer industry has always been fairly competitive during the recession, and there have been some decent pricing cuts. People are still prepared to spend money on technology if they get a benefit out of it," Mr Allen said.

The expert went on to say that the market for tablet computers is set to rise this year. He highlighted the huge number of new releases at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

He said, however, that even if competition in the PC market rises significantly, the influx of new tablet computers won't replace desktops and laptops. "Anyone who's tech-savvy will be using both," he said.

His comments emerged as the number of PCs shipped around the globe reached 350.9 million last year, a 13.9 per cent increase on 2009's data, according to recent figures published by Gartner.
