IT industry news: Android 'struggles to make a difference'

Google's mobile phone, the Android handset, is facing tough competition to stand out from its peers, according to Michael Morgan, senior analyst of mobile devices at market intelligence company ABI Research.

Mr Morgan said a wide range of competitors in the sector could be described as a "sticky wicket" for every original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that has adopted Android so far.

"Some OEMs will try to differentiate on hardware capabilities, but this realm is best left to those who have direct vertical access to key smartphone hardware," he explained.

Examples of this are cameras, processors and touchscreens that "competitors can't just pick up in the open market," Mr Morgan explained.

The expert went on to say that other makers will try to differentiate "by offering the lowest price possible," even if they "eventually have to sacrifice margin to keep in the game".

His comments emerged as Sony Ericsson is reportedly considering the idea of bringing back the Cyber-shot imaging brand through its latest Android smartphones, the unofficial Sony Ericsson Xperia Blog reported earlier this month.
