Google's Android huge popularity may be down to "the diversity of hardware available" for the platform, according to Editor of Stuff magazine Will Findlater.
"The sheer weight of support for Android from manufacturers" means "there are Android phones from all the different manufacturers catering for all different needs and budgets", the expert said.
His comments emerged as the latest Q2 2011 smart phone market estimates from Canalys have found Android holds 48 per cent of the global market share.
Mr Findlater said that Android phones are more flexible in terms of offering models designed for specific functions.
"If you have very specific needs, Android almost certainly will have apps that cater for them," Mr Findlater said, adding that "Apple's iOS for one certainly doesn’t compete in those ways at the moment".
