IT industry news: Action on filesharing 'too quick'

06:26 4th February 2011

Measures taken by the UK government to stop illegal filesharing on the internet is going too far and too fast, according to Mark Jackson, editor-in-chief of ISPreview.co.uk.

Parliament has recently laid out secondary rules on sharing the costs of the Digital Economy Act's measures to deal with copyright infringement on the internet.

Communications minister Ed Vaizey said copyright violations cost the creative sector £400 million annually, citing industry estimates.

But Mr Jackson said lawmakers were putting too much emphasis on handing out fines to consumers as opposed to providing them with incentives to download in a lawful manner.

"ISPs have argued long and hard for a beneficiary pays principle, which would see rights holders shoulder 100 per cent of the costs," he said.

"As a result of this move, the vast majority of innocent internet users in the UK will have to pay higher prices for their broadband."
