The advent of 4G technology could significantly improve the coverage of broadband in the UK. according to Richard Patterson, director of Broadband Expert.
"The introduction of 4G is a massive opportunity to bring better broadband coverage to those in rural areas with poor or no coverage and shouldn’t be underestimated," he said.
The expert suggested that a combination of government subsidies and obliging operators to enhance coverage of rural areas would allow the arrival of 4G to break the current mobile broadband stranglehold some users' experience.
"Investing in additional mobile towers to bring 4G mobile broadband coverage to rural areas represents the best, and most likely the most economical, solution to bringing good quality broadband coverage to many rural not-spots," he added.
His comments emerged as the Communications Consumer Panel recently called upon Ofcom to focus the 4G auction due for 2013 on improving mobile coverage in rural areas.
