IT industry 'must hire more trainees'

08:39 25th January 2011

The IT industry sector should look into hiring new trainees as opposed to relying on established IT professionals in order to widen the talent pool, according to James Toovey, founder and director of Langley James, the IT recruitment agency.

"Companies need to look at bringing trainees in rather than expecting everybody to hit the ground running," Mr Toovey said.

He went on to say that knowledge of new platforms such as social media with sites like Facebook and Twitter can bring "fresh ideas" to a company's IT practice.

His comments emerged as the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG's latest Report on Jobs revealed earlier this month that IT and computing positions received the strongest spike in recruitment for six months in Britain last year.

The expert also said the problem of a skills shortage derives from companies hiring candidates with significant experience. However, if companies are looking to save money, hiring a new trainee might be an option, he added.
